The IRS has been working on a way to get updated information regarding EINs (Employer Identification Numbers). Often, the person who applied for the EIN is either no longer authorized to represent the organization or has moved on to another employer.  This means that communications with the IRS related to the EIN, sometimes decades after it has been issued, are very difficult.  To this end they have released final regulations on the subject and will begin requiring a new form that updates who is a responsible party with each organization and appropriate contact information.  The IRS is working on the form, instructions and filing frequency now and will release the requirements prior to January 1, 2014.  The form will be retroactive and all EIN holders will be required to complete it.

We will watch for the form and instructions and keep you posted.  Currently, per the paperwork reduction act, the IRS estimates that the form will take an average of 15 minutes to complete per filing period.
